Paralytic shellfish poison accumulation yields and feeding time activity in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and king scallop (Pecten maximus) ArchiMer
Bougrier, Serge; Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele; Masselin, Pierre; Truquet, Philippe.
Pacific oysters and king scallops placed individually in a recirculating flume were fed for 2 weeks with a constant concentration (120 cell ml(-1)) of a toxic strain of Alexandrium minutum. Fluorescence at the outlet of each experimental unit was measured continuously, and biodeposits were recovered twice daily to evaluate feeding time activity (FTA) and rates of organic filtration (OFR), ingestion (OIR) and organic absorption (OAR). Ion-pairing high performance liquid chromatography (IP-HPLC) was performed concurrently to quantify paralytic phycotoxins both (i) individually in shellfish at the end of the contamination period and (ii) in A. minutum cultures to estimate cellular toxin concentration. These data allowed comparison of the actual tissue toxin...

Lassus, Patrick; Amzil, Zouher; Bardouil, Michele; Baron, Regis; Bohec, Madeleine; Bougrier, Serge; Garen, Pierre; Laabir, Mohamed; Leguay, Didier; Masselin, Pierre; Truquet, Philippe; Sechet, Veronique; Bablon, Clotilde; Berard, Jean-baptiste; Carre, Camille; Cheignon, Valerie; Lecamp, Sylvain; Mabit, Marie.

Bougrier, Serge; Masson, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Fouche, Dominique; Leroy, Anne; Faury, Nicole; Ratiskol, Jacqueline.
One of the problems faced by oyster farmers in France is the immediate or delayed mortality of oysters in the storage tanks prior to shipping. This may be due to overstocking and/or improper water management. To investigate the problem, experiments were performed in commercial storage tanks stocked with oysters at different densities. The aim of this study was to provide some basic experimental data and guidelines for better handling of oysters prior to shipping

The EU project "GENEPHYS", initiated by the IFREMER laboratory GAP-La Tremblade (Génétique Aquaculture et Pathologie) and CREMA-l'Houmeau (Centre de Recherche en Ecologie Marine et Aquaculture), aims to establish the relationships between physiological traits involved in growth (oxygen consumption, absorption efficiency, scope for growth) and their genetic bases (determinism, variability within and among populations) in cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas. The main bjectives are : 1. To express the maximum variability of growth, both at the larval stage and at the adult stage, in a oyster population originating from parents of various origins. 2. To check the persistence over the time, of growth performance and related physiological functions. 3. To explain...

Haure, Joel; Penisson, Christian; Bougrier, Serge; Baud, Jean-pierre.

Collet, Bertrand; Boudry, Pierre; Bougrier, Serge; Heurtebise, Serge; Phelipot, Pascal; Ledu, Christophe; Morand, Berenice; Heral, Maurice; Gerard, Andre.
A European programme (GENEPHYS) was launched in 1996 to study the genetic basis and variability of physiological characters involved in growth in Crassostrea gigas. This research programme was a prerequisite for any genetic selection programme on physiological functions. Research groups from Ireland, England, Greece and France are involved in this project and participate in genetic analyses (allozymes and microsatellites) and physiological analyses (ecophysiology, enzymology, stress proteins). Ifremer at La Tremblade was responsible for producing the biological material while Ifremer-CREMA (human-influenced marine ecosystems research centre) was responsible for carrying out non-destructive physiological analyses.

Prou, Jean; Barille, Laurent; Heral, Maurice; Ratiskol, Gilles; Soletchnik, Patrick; Bougrier, Serge; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe.
During a fortnightly tidal cycle, a Mytilus edulis population was submitted to natural food conditions in the bay of Marennes-Oléron. During 4 tidal cycles, in vivo continuous measurements of turbidity and fluorescence were recorded to study the evolution of Total Particulate Matter (TPM), phaeopigments and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Turbidity in the water column is clearly influenced by resuspension of sediment. Degradated cells of phytoplankton were associated with sediments, involving strong correlation between phaeopigments and turbidity. High values of chlorophyll-a were encountered during neap tides when turbidity was low. No relation with resuspension processes were observed. No effect of fortnightly variability on retention was observed by...

Bougrier, Serge; Raguenes, Gerard; Bachere, Evelyne; Tige, Gilbert; Grizel, Henri.
The inability to rear the oysters C. gigas and O. edulis in certain Brittany waters has prompted us to conduct breeding trials with C. angulata C. gigas and their hybrids. Results have revealed that all the strains tested were sensitive to Tributyl tin (TBT), showing atnormal shell thickness and their growth was lower than C. gigas. In addition, C. angulata was still affected by the presence of the Iridovirus in France.

Alimentation expérimentale de l'huître Crassostrea gigas à l'aide de navicules bleus Haslea ostrearia (Simonsen) de différentes tailles ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe; Robert, Jean-michel.
The influence on the feeding physiology (clearance, filtration, ingestion, absorption) of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas of low concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM ranging from 2 to 20 mg.l-l) and high food quality (mean organic fraction =54 %) was studied in the laboratory. Experimental diets were made up with three strains of the "blue diatom" Haslea ostrearia, which is responsible of the greening of oyster-ponds. The strains were characterized by different sizes (48, 65 and 98 µm respectively) but possessed the same density and biochemical composition. Clearance rate was found constant at 2.2 1.h(-l).g-l dry weight and therefore was not influenced by increasing seston load. Pseudofaeces production was observed for SPM...

Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe.
A continuous monitoring system to measure the respiration of Crassostrea gigas has been developped. The metabolic function estimated by oxygen consumption has been monitored during periods of 24 h, without food, at a temperature constant of 15°C. Preliminary results showed that the mean percentage of oyster activities was 50 % with a high variability from 0 to 100 %. The number of activity periods per day (24 h) is function of the oysters with variation between 0 and 7.

Separate effects of triploidy, parentage and genomic diversity upon feeding behaviour, metabolic efficiency and net energy balance in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Hawkins, Ajs; Magoulas, A; Heral, Maurice; Bougrier, Serge; Naciri-graven, Y; Day, Aj; Kotoulas, G.
Triploid oysters were induced using cytochalasin B upon retention of either the first (meiosis I triploids) or the second (meiosis II triploids) polar body in embryos from a single cohort derived from mixed parentage. Allozyme and microsatellite assays enabled the confirmation of both parentage and triploidy status in each oyster. Comparison of meiosis I triploids, meiosis II triploids and diploid siblings established that improved physiological performance in triploids was associated with increased allelic variation, rather than with the quantitative dosage effects of ploidy status. An unidentified maternal in¯uence also interacted with genotype. Among full sibs, allelic variation measured as multi-locus enzyme heterozygosity accounted for up to 42% of...
